HONOLULU – The Chaminade University beach volleyball team got a pair of extra-set wins Thursday which propelled them to a 4-1 win over Hawai'i Pacific University on Thursday at Hunakai Park.
The Silverswords improved to 4-0 on the season and have a five-match winning streak dating back to the final match of 2025, the second-longest win streak by the third-year program. They have also won all 16 meetings between the two programs.
Thursday's match was a makeup from Monday's postponement due to the weather. The Sharks fell to 0-4 on the year.
The opening match was a harbinger of things to come with the No. 5 duo of
Tabby Allen (Leander, Texas/Rouse) and
Maylynn Mitchell (Corona, Calif./Orange Lutheran) getting a 25-23, 15-21, 15-5 victory over Maile Salang and Mia Ferdinand to open the competition.
Mykelle Brainard (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge) and
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North, Mo.) swept their match in the second flight, putting the 'Swords up, 2-0.
Chaminade clinched the match as its Flight 3 team of
DeLaney Poling (Gilbert, Ariz./Park University/Perry HS) and
Audrah Johnson (Nampa, Idaho/Utah State University/Nampa HS) survived a three-set thriller, 21-18, 17-21, 17-15, against Jordyn McCutcheon and Peyton McBride.
After CUH's No. 1 flight of
Sina Bauer (Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany/Maximillian-von-Montgelas Gymnasium Vilsbiburg) and
Beele Wieczorek (Wiesbaden, Germany/Elly-Heuss School) swept their match, Chaminade was looking for the complete sweep but
Malena Mihalik (Santa Fe, Argentina/San Eugenio) and
Ma'ila Stephens (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Siena College/Mililani HS) dropped their No. 4 duo match in two sets. However, the pair, after falling in the first set, rallied from 18-11 down in the second and got within a point late before being outlasted.
In the non-counting exhibition match,
Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) and
Kyra Pagud (Honolulu/Moanalua) swept Raiatea Campbell and Ally Hobbs, 21-13, 21-12.
The 'Swords will embark on their first-ever trip outside of O'ahu at the Corban Invitational next week in Salem, Oregon. Chaminade faces Southern Oregon and Sacramento State in the Friday, Feb. 20 opener.
