Chad Konishi on Wendsday announced
Garett Yukumoto and
Trevor Ichimura have joined the staff as assistant coaches.
Yukumoto is well known throughout the local collegiate baseball scene. The previous eight years, he was at the University of Hawai'i Hilo, the first seven as associate head coach before becoming the Vulcans' interim head coach this past spring.
Also known as "Coach Yuks," Yukumoto was the head coach at Hawai'i Pacific University from 2006 to 2018 and is the program's all-time winningest coach with 362 career victories and a pair of Pacific West Conference championships
Yukumoto was the 2010 PacWest Coach of the Year after guiding the then-Sea Warriors to a school-record 39 wins and the program's first-ever NCAA Division II West Regional final appearance.
Before moving to the collegiate ranks, Yukumoto coached Leilehua High School and was a two-time O'ahu Interscholastic Association West Division Coach of the Year.
An Aiea High School graduate, he played at both Portland State University then HPU. Among his many occupations, Yukumoto was a principal at Iliahi Elementary School and vice principal at Leilehua High and Wahiawa Community School.
Ichimura, a Mililani native, comes to the Silverswords after spending the last two years as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Hawai'i. His first year in Manoa saw the Rainbows win 35 games for the second straight year, the first back-to-back 35-win season since 1991-92.
Before his time as a grad assistant, Ichimura was on Hawai'i's pitching staff for five seasons (2020-24), making 22 career appearances, all out of the bullpen. After graduating from Iolani School in 2018, he attended his true freshman year at Washington State University.
Ichimura, who will be the 'Swords pitching coach, has his Bachelor's degree in Economics and Master's in Education at UH.
