LAIE, HI- Chaminade Men's Soccer went to the campus of BYU-Hawaii looking for a hard-earned victory. Despite a valiant effort, and a game that was tied until the 36
th minute, the Seasiders prevailed 4-1 over the Swords in Chaminade's final match of the season.
BYU-Hawaii grabbed the lead with a goal by Bent Jenson in the 36th minute. Despite BYU-Hawaii leading in the shot count 10-3 in the opening 45 minutes, the Swords did their best to stay tight to the Seasiders and went to the half down 1-0. The second half saw no scoring for over twenty minutes as the Swords still found themselves only down a goal. Chaminade's
Keegan Tomita (Mercer Island, WA/ Mercer Isl.) was booked with a second yellow card in the 68
th minute and Chaminade went down to ten men. Bent Jenson pounced on the opportunity and tallied another goal for BYU-Hawaii to extend the lead to 2-0. Another goal in the 74
th minute helped ice the game for the Seasiders. CUH kept fighting, and a goal by senior
Chase Kodama (Woodland Hills, CA/Taft) got the Swords on the board. BYU-Hawaii added another goal in the waning seconds of action for the 4-1 victory.
Chaminade freshman goalkeeper
Jose Miguel Pena (Santiago, Chile/St. George's) concluded his freshman campaign by saving 12 shots from BYU-Hawaii. Fellow freshman
Dayton Sato (Waipahu, HI/Pearl City) led the way with four shots for the Swords.
Coach Higgins enjoyed seeing some of the competitiveness in his players. “We saw moments of good soccer. The type of soccer we're learning to play and we did it playing down a man for thirty minutes. The guys really kept at it and when we were a man down we possessed the ball and created some scoring opportunities.”
BYU-Hawaii outshot CUH 26-9.
With the loss, Chaminade concludes the season at 0-15-2, 0-11-1 and the Seasiders move to 9-7-2, 5-5-2.
