CUH WVB: Swords Earn Tough Road Win over Dominican in Five Sets

Viveiros leads Chaminade with double-double (14 kills and 27 digs)

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, CA- Chaminade took a five-set win over Dominican tonight at the Conlan Center on the DUC campus.  The win ended a two-game losing streak for the Swords and helped inch CUH closer to .500 in conference (2-3) just five contests in to PacWest play.

The Swords lost a tough first set, leading 19-18 after a kill by senior Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha-Kapalama).  Following the kill, the Penguins went on a 7-1 run to win the set 25-20. The Swords responded in set two, winning the set 25-18.  Junior Kapiolani Rapoza (Kailua, HI/Sacred Hearts) clinched the set with the game-winning kill off an assist from junior Daniella Montoya (Las Vegas, NM/ Robertson). Chaminade kept the momentum going in the third set, winning the set 25-23.

The fourth set saw more impressive competition as neither team was willing to give in. A huge ace from setter Daniella Montoya in the fourth set gave the Swords a 22-21 lead and forced a Penguin timeout.  Dominican had led 21-17 before the 5-0 CUH run in the fourth. DUC responded, winning the fourth set 26-24 and forcing a fifth and final set.

Chaminade got out to an early 5-0 lead in set five and didn't look back, winning the final set easily, 15-3.

Senior Whitney Viveiros led the way with an impressive performance, tallying 14 kills to go along with 27 digs. Freshman Brenda Walker (Honolulu HI/ McKinley) finished with 21 digs, while fellow freshman Kim Spring (Bern, Switzerland/ Feusi Bildungszentrum and Feusi Sportschule) added 11 kills in the win.  Kapiolani Rapoza tallied 10 kills for CUH as well.  Freshman setter Valentina Bevilacqua (Vacallo, Switzerland/Scuola Cantonale di Commercio Bellinzona) along with Montoya shared setting duties for CUH in victory.  Montoya finished with 33 assists, while Bevilacqua contributed 18.

Dominican was led by Hannah Stocking with 12 kills.

Coach Kabalis commented on the win: “Whitney led us with 14 kills and 27 digs.  We were in and out of the match. We had ball control errors and hitting errors that kept us from achieving our 3-0 game goal.  We lacked focus, but we were able to refocus in the fifth set and stay on task.”

The Swords move to 5-8 (2-3 PWC) with the win. Dominican falls to 5-7 (3-1 PWC). Chaminade is back in action on September 29th as the Swords head to Oakland, CA and Tobin Gymnasium to take on Holy Names.  First serve is set for 7:00 PM PT.
