Box Score HONOLULU, HI- The Swords got back in the win column with a 3-1 win over the Alaska Nanooks of the GNAC conference this evening in McCabe Gym. The match was the first of three matches for Chaminade against GNAC opponents this weekend.
Chaminade got off to a slow start losing the opening set 16-25. The Swords responded with a hard-fought victory in game two, winning 25-22 in the set, earning the final point off a kill by freshman outside hitter
Kim Spring (Bern, Switzerland/ Feusi Bildungszentrum and Feusi Sportschule). Spring led the Swords with 20 kills on the night. A critical third set saw Chaminade tie the contest as Spring and freshman
Reigna Johnson (Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) assisted on a block to tie the score at 17 all.
Chaminade finished off a crucial third set, winning 25-21; storming back late in the set to gain the 2-1 set lead. The Swords closed out the Nanooks in four, winning a tough fourth set 26-24 to notch the 3-1 win.
Alaska hit .205 for the match, while Chaminade hit .246 on the match, including .394 in the third set.
Freshman
Valentina Bevilacqua (Vacallo, Switzerland/Scuola Cantonale di Commercio Bellinzona) led the CUH offense with a season high 42 assists.
Senior
Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha) added 11 kills in the victory while junior
Crystal Powell (Honolulu HI/Word of Life) contributed 10 kills for CUH.
The Swords were strong defensively, finishing with 61 digs, fifteen more than the Nanooks. Sophomore
Athena Maskarich (Redwood City, CA/Notre Dame) led the Swords with 15 digs on the match.
The Nanooks were led by Reilly Stevens with 16 kills.
The Swords improve to 2-3 (0-0 PWC) with the win. Alaska falls to 2-2. Chaminade is back in action on Friday night as the Swords take on Western Oregon. First serve is set for 7:00 PM HT.
