Sea Lions Halt Swords’ Win Streak

Spring's 14 kills led the Swords at Point Loma.
Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Chaminade's 4-match win streak came to a halt Friday night, falling to Point Loma in four, 25-22, 25-27, 25-16, 25-19, in a Pacific West Conference match.

The Silverswords fell to 9-13 overall and 6-11 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions, who are just outside the Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 21-6 and 14-4.

Kim Spring put down 14 kills with 16 digs, both team-highs. Crystal Powell added 10 kills. Daniella Montoya add 20 assists while Valentina Bevilacqua had 18. Kapiolani Rapoza led the Swords with three combined blocks, while Brenda Walker had 14 digs.

Heather Leavitt led the Sea Lions with 18 kills.

In the first set, Chaminade opened up a 15-10 lead midway through. But a run of eight straight Sea Lion points proved too costly and as Point Loma would prevail.

In Set 2, the Swords found themselves down by three, 18-15, midway through Set 2. But CUH stormed back, taking a 20-19 lead on Walker's ace. The Swords built a 24-21 lead, but PLNU scored four straight and was serving for the set at 25-24. Spring's kill tied the set, Reigna Johnson gave the Swords the lead with kill, then Kylee Pedro ended the set with an ace.

Point Loma opened the third set with a purpose, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage. But the resilient Swords stormed back, going on a 9-2 run to take a 10-9 lead. PLNU, in turn, came back to force a 12-all deadlock. The Sea Lions then went on a lengthy run to close out the set and take a 2-1 lead.

A slow start to the fourth set doomed Chaminade as the Swords trailed by five midway through the fourth. The Swords closed to within three, but the Sea Lions proved too formidable on their home court, winning the fourth by six.

Chaminade was held to a .135 attacking percentage while Point Loma hit .235. The Sea Lions also out-blocked the Swords, 10-6 and held an 82-68 dig advantage.

The Swords will attempt to start a new winning streak when they travel to Azusa Pacific tomorrow.
