Box Score HONOLULU – The Chaminade women's basketball team ended the 2013 calendar year on a sour note, dropping a 92-58 decision to Malone University, 92-58, Thursday at McCabe Gym.
Kennedi Akana led the Silverswords with 13 points while
Hanna Curtius dropped 12, hitting 3-of-4 from beyond 3-point range.
Lilia Maio contributed with eight points and seven boards while
Angela Rigo had seven points and three assists.
Glacen Florita had six rebounds and hit both of her free throws to improve to a perfect 26-for-26 from the charity stripe this season.
The Pioneers' Deborah Simmers led all scorers with 20 points while Lauren Myers had 14. Sydnee Penn nearly recorded a rare triple-double with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists.
The Silverswords fell to 1-7 on the season while the Pioneers improved to 6-3.
The visitors from Canton, Ohio, jumped out to a double-digit lead five minutes into the contest and would expand it to 24 late in the first half, as Malone held a 52-31 halftime lead.
The Swords were held to 46.2 percent from the floor (12-of-26) while the Pioneers shot 20-of-38 for 52.6 percent. Malone also out-rebounded Chaminade 29-10 in the half, 14-2 offensively. The disparity reflected in second chances points as the Pioneers dominated 23-0.
The Swords would find their defense, holding the Pioneers to only 37.8 percent shooting in the second half, but Chaminade was held to only eight made field goals in the second stanza, shooting 25.8 percent.
The Swords will take the Christmas break off and return to the McCabe Gym floor on Saturday, Jan. 4 when they host Dixie State in a Pacific West Conference game at 5 p.m. Live audio of the game will be available on goswords.com.
