CUH Softball: Swords Defeat BYU-Hawaii 8-3 and 3-2

Strom-Okimoto goes 3-6 with one homerun and three RBI’s

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPIO, HI –Chaminade earned two non-conference victories this afternoon as the Swords defeated BYU-Hawaii 8-3 and 3-2 in a doubleheader at Central Oahu Regional Park in Waipio, HI.
 
Chaminade got rolling early in game one as Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) singled and drove in Kori Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) en route to six first inning runs for the Silverswords.  Sophomore first baseman Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) senior Letisha Vaba (Stockton, CA/San Joaquin Delta JC) and sophomore Samantha Ford (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life Academy) each had singles as CUH batted around and led 6-0 over the 'Siders after one inning.    
 
Following two innings of scoreless play, BYU-Hawaii got on the board courtesy of a solo homerun to centerfield from Haley Sones in the top of the fourth. CUH responded, tacking on a run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Rayna Strom-Okimoto, scoring Kori Berinobis and the Swords regained a six-run lead at 7-1. The 'Siders scored two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth and cut the lead to four runs at 7-3.
 
Chaminade tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as a single by Elia Lizarraga (Torrance, CA/Narbonne) drove in Kori Berinobis for an 8-3 CUH lead.  The final in game one finished with the same score, 8-3 Chaminade.
 
Sophomore pitcher Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) earned the win, giving up three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.  Tiffanee Frampton earned the loss for the 'Siders.  Kori Berinobis led the way offensively for CUH going 2-4 and scoring three runs in game one. 
 
Game two saw BYU-Hawaii score a run in the second inning as Haley Sones stole home following a wild pitch and the 'Siders led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning. After a quiet spell for both teams, the Swords Strom-Okimoto tied the game at one run apiece with a solo homerun to centerfield. 
 
BYU-Hawaii scored in the top of the sixth as Tiffany Smith singled and worked her way around the bases to give the Seasiders the 2-1 lead.  This back and forth affair continued as Kori Berinobis earned a walk to start the CUH side of the sixth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aja Keyes to tie the score at 2-2 heading to the 7th inning. 
 
After a strong performance from freshman Chelsea Camello (Hilo, HI/Waiakea) through six innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs, Brett Aspel came into the contest in the seventh inning to attempt to close out the 'Siders.  After two Seasiders reached base, CUH got out of the jam and headed to the bottom of the seventh tied with BYU-H 2-2. 
 
Chaminade won the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning as Samantha Ford double to left field scoring Shannan Hokama for the 3-2 walk-off victory.
 
Gabrielle Hawkins took the loss for BYU-Hawaii, while Aspel earned her second win of the day for the Silverswords in relief action. 
 
Chaminade is back in action for a doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific on Sunday, February 24th in Waipio, HI (CORP).  First pitch is set for 12:00 PM HT.  The Swords move to 3-5, 0-0 in PWC with the sweep, while BYU-Hawaii moves 2-12 overall.
