WVB: Seasiders Hand Swords Straight Set Loss

Box Score

LAIE, Hawai'i – The Chaminade women's volleyball team returned to regular season action for the first time in two weeks Friday evening. The rust was apparent as the Silverswords were on the short end of a 25-11, 25-14, 25-13 loss to fourth-ranked and defending Pacific West Conference champions, BYU-Hawai'i in the conference opener for both teams, played at the Canon Activities Center.

Chaminade, playing in its first match outside of McCabe Gym this season, fell to 3-3 overall on the season and 0-1 in the conference, while the Seasiders remained perfect on the year at 6-0 and 1-0.

BYUH set the tone early in the first set. After CUH got the opening point of the match, the Seasiders ran off seven straight, forcing a Swords timeout. BYUH didn't look back, hitting a blistering .588 (11 kills, 17 attacks, one error) while forcing the Swords to hit negative-.080 in the first set.

Chaminade showed more life in the second, staying to within two points of the Seasiders at 8-6. But BYUH got three kills by two-time PacWest Player of the Year Shih Ting Chen as once again the Seasiders pulled away to convincingly take Set 2.

In the third set, CUH came out swinging, forcing a 6-all tie after kills by Reigna Johnson and Lexis Evans and a Seasider hitting error. After a BYUH mini-run, the Swords got three straight points to pull to within 14-11. But a 7-1 Seasider run, aided by four CUH hitting errors, stalled a potential comeback.

The Swords were paced by Kapiolani Rapoza and Ku'ulei Lynch with four kills each. Chaminade's offense, which was fifth in the conference at .217, was held to a zero percentage (23 kills, 23 errors, 96 attacks) on the evening. Meanwhile, BYU-Hawai'i hit an astounding .412 (40-7-80) on the night and out-blocked the Swords, 8-2. Chen and Kathleen Collette led the Seasiders with 11 kills each.

The 38 total points scored by the Swords is their lowest since putting up 34 to Hawai'i-Hilo on Nov. 12, 2011.

Chaminade returns to the floor tomorrow when it faces in-city rival, Hawai'i Pacific at McCabe Gym. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
