HONOLULU – The week couldn't end fast enough for the Chaminade women's volleyball team. One night after scoring the fewest points in a match since 2011 in a three-set loss at No. 4 BYU-Hawai'i, the Silverswords returned home to McCabe Gym Saturday and were swept by in-city rival Hawai'i Pacific, 25-23, 25-17, 25-20.
The loss dropped the Swords to 3-4 on the season, 0-2 in the Pacific West Conference while Sea Warriors improved to 8-2 and 2-0. The loss also extended the Silverswords' current losing streak to HPU to 12 matches, dating back to 2008.
Kim Spring tied a season-high with 14 kills and Kapiolani Rapoza added seven in the loss. Pomai Recca and Kasey Thompson led HPU with 11 kills each.
Chaminade led through much of the early stages of the first set. Kills by Spring and Kylee Pedro as well as a pair of HPU hitting errors gave the Swords at 15-13 lead. The set went back-and-forth until the Sea Warriors were able to grab a 22-19 advantage, prompting a CUH timeout. The Swords tied it at 23 with a pair of Spring kills and two HPU hitting errors, but a Thompson kill and a Chaminade hitting error gave the Sea Warriors the first set.
The second set saw the Swords fall behind by five early, but got four consecutive blocks to pull to within one at 9-8. Ku'ulei Lynch was involved in all four, amassing two block assists and two block solos. But HPU went on a decisive 10-1 run to capture the second set.
That perhaps carried over into the third set as HPU jumped out to an 11-4 lead. CUH battled back, but would get only to within three as the Sea Warriors clinched the set and the match.
Chaminade hit .140 in the match, their second-lowest output of the season. The Swords hit a paltry .076 against BYUH and HPU combined. They did manage to get seven total blocks, tied for the second-highest of the year. The Sea Warriors, however, hit .235 and got 11 total blocks.
The Swords will be in action next Thursday as they travel to the Big Island to face Hawai'i-Hilo at 7 p.m.. Chaminade returns to the McCabe Gym floor next Saturday, Sept. 27 with a rematch against No. 4 BYUH. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
