WAIKALOA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team rebounded from a slow start to forge their way into an eighth-place tie after the opening two rounds of the Dennis Rose Invitational at the par-72 Waikaloa Kings' Course on the Big Island Friday.
After posting an opening round of 322 in the morning, the Silverswords fared much better in the afternoon's Round 2 despite breezy conditions, firing a 308 to finish the day at plus-55, tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills, putting them 16 shots behind Day 1 leader, Hawai'i-Hilo. Their second-round total was tied for the second-lowest posted by any of the 13 teams participating.
JT Trevathan carded back-to-back 6-over 78s to put him at 12-over, tied for 19
th place, just nine shots behind the leader, Jordan Lamb of Wilmington, heading into Saturday's third and final round.
Meanwhile, three 'Swords improved their scores in the afternoon session.
Justin Taparra carded an 8-over 80 in the morning, but rallied back in the afternoon to fire a 78, putting him at 14-over, tied for 28
th.
Lucas Park shot an 85 but roared back for a 2-over 74 in the afternoon, putting him at 15-over. Park had the highest jump of any golfer between Rounds 1 and 2, improving 29 places to put him in a tie for 35
th.
His 9-shot improvement, however, was outdone by teammate
R.J. Garczynski, who had a 10-stroke differential with his morning 88, followed by a 78. Park's and Garczynski's improvements were only eclipsed by Hawai'i Pacific's Zach Cox who had a 14-shot improvement.
Jarin Harada rounded out the Silverswords with a 79 and 88 to put him at 23-over.
The 'Swords conclude the Dennis Rose Invitational in Saturday's final round, starting at 7:30 a.m. It is also their final round of their fall season before their championship season begins in the spring.
