KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team traveled off-island for the first time this season, falling to BYU-Hawai'i, 9-0, Friday at the Holua Tennis & Pickleball Center.
Playing in their first match away from O'ahu for the first time in two years, the Silverswords made a valiant effort before falling to the Seasiders who are ranked second in the nation and first in the West Region.
Chaminade fell to 0-2 while BYUH improved to 3-0.
Two Silverswords managed to take a game off the powerful BYUH squad with
Cai Yan Fang taking one from Leah Heimuli in No. 3 singles while
Kim Spring also got a game off McKenna Lloyd in the No. 6 spot.
Kauanoe Beamer drew the No. 1 spot in singles against the nation's second-ranked player (No. 1 in the West Region) in Dallas Zhang while
Elyssa Shirai battled Karen Liu, the No. 4 ranked player in the country and fourth in the West, in No. 2 singles.
For the second straight match, the 'Swords' doubles teams remained in their same positions with Beamer and Shirai in the No. 1 spot while Fang and
Tomomi Kohno were at No. 2. Spring and
Emma Haurillon rounded out Chaminade's doubles teams at No. 3.
The 'Swords resume action on the Big Island Saturday when they battle No. 22 Sonoma State at 8 a.m.
