KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team opened the 2018 season, dropping a 9-0 decision to Hawai'i Hilo Friday at the Holua Tennis Resorts.
Freshmen
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, Hawai'i/Kahuku) made their collegiate debuts by occupying the Silverswords' top two spots. The duo opened the day by teaming at No. 1 doubles but fell to the Vulcans' squad of Daniela Sanz and Devanshi Bhimjiyani, 8-2.
Chaminade's No. 2 team of
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) and
Emma Haurillon (Yigo, Guam/St. Thomas Aquinas) also lost an 8-2 decision to UHH's Marina Colvee Debrot and Carmelle Joyner. At No. 3 doubles,
Cai Yan Fang (Zhongshan, China/McKinley) and
Hannah Parker (Kihei, Hawai'i/St. Anthony) were blanked 8-0 to Sara Marin and Irena Le.
Liner got the nod in No. 1 singles but fell to Colvee Debrot 6-2, 6-1 while Te`i was dropped by Marin 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
Fang (No. 3 singles) and
Jackie McGreal (Pasadena, Calif./Marathana) (No. 6) were blanked in their respective singles matches while
Elyssa Shirai at No. 4 singles lost to Irena Le 6-0, 6-1. Haurillon (No. 5) nearly rallied against Cheyenne Schula before succumbing 6-0, 6-3.
Chaminade is 0-1 to open the season while UH Hilo is 1-0.
The 'Swords will face No. 9 UC San Diego on Saturday.
