WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – For the second time in three days, the Chaminade University women's tennis team squared off against a Division I foe.
Although the Silverswords fell to Valparaiso on Monday, 9-0, at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park, the 'Swords continue to show improvement.
In five matches, Chaminade managed to take games off the opposition.
In the opening doubles, the 'Swords' No. 1 team of
Catrina Liner (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) and
Salamasina Te`i (Hau'ula, Hawai'i/Kahuku) got two games off the Crusaders' duo of Claire Czerwonka and Jelena Vujanic, 8-2. In No. 2 doubles,
Emma Haurillon (Yigo, Guam/St. Thomas Aquinas) and
Elyssa Shirai (Waipahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) took a game in an 8-1 defeat.
In singles action, Liner managed four games in a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Czerwonka in the No. 1 position, the most the freshman has taken off an opponent this season. Shirai (No. 3) and
Hannah Parker (Kihei, Hawai'i/St. Anthony) at No. 6 also took games.
Valpo, of the Missouri Valley Conference, evened its record to 5-5 while CUH dropped to 0-6. The Silverswords return to action Friday against Bethel College of Minnesota at CORP Tennis Courts.
