In Hawaiian language, "ho'okahi" translates "to make one."
On Mondays and Thursdays over the next few weeks, GoSwords.com will talk to select returning student-athletes from all 10 Chaminade University sports about how they are learning from home, keeping busy and coping with the current situation.
Featured here is
Kayleen Lau of women's tennis. The freshman from Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i had three wins in her rookie season including an upset over Dallas Baptist's regionally-ranked doubles team in her very first collegiate match. She was on a two-match winning streak in singles when the season was cancelled.
Q (GS.com): What are you missing the most about Chaminade?
A (ES): I miss the beautiful view of Diamond Head I got to see every day.
Q: Outside of distance learning, what are you doing to pass the time?
A: If I'm not on Netflix binge-watching "The Avatar," I'm usually taking a nap.
Q: What are you doing to keep your spirits up during the situation?
A: I've been watching comedy shows like "The Office" and "Rick and Morty."
Q: How are you staying connected with you coaches and teammates?
A: We Zoom and also text each other in our group chat.
Q: Have you learned any new skills or picked up new hobbies that you otherwise would not have if not for the current situation?
A: I picked up watercolor painting as one of my newest hobbies. I've always been artistic but with my regular schedule, never found the time to invest in it. Now it seems I have all the time in the world to paint.
Q: What is your favorite on-the-field or on-court memory from this past 2019-20 year?
A: It was during the last match our team got to play before it got cut short by COVID-19. We played against UH Hilo and, during our matches, you could feel the intensity and energy both teams brought. I really miss being on the court with my teammates and competing.
Q: What is the first thing you will do after we return to a sense of "normalcy?"
A: Play doubles with my friends and family at the Wells Tennis Courts on Maui.
