In Hawaiian language, "ho'okahi" translates "to make one."
On Mondays and Thursdays this summer, GoSwords.com will talk to select returning student-athletes from all 10 Chaminade University sports about how they are learning from home, keeping busy and coping with the current situation.
Featured here is
Riley Lynch of women's volleyball. The Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i native set a career-high with four assists on Oct. 20 against Notre Dame de Namur. She will be a senior this upcoming season.
Q (GS.com): What are you missing the most about Chaminade?
A (ES): I am missing my friends and teammates in class and also miss having a schedule like going to practice and being at class at a certain time. It's so easy to lose track of time and sleep in but I do love having the time to sleep in and not have to worry about being late or not waking up from my alarm!
Q: Outside of distance learning, what are you doing to pass the time?
A: I am spending a lot of time at the beach and getting some sun. Six feet away and in my own space! Also, getting healthier physically and trying new workouts that I find online.
Q: How are you staying connected with your coaches and teammates?
A: At this time as well all know, it's hard to see everyone and a majority of my team is back home on the mainland. We all find ways to keep in touch and one way is using Zoom. We stay connected and work out together on Fridays and we all get to make out our own workout and share it with the team. Super fun and it makes us all accountable.
Q: Have you learned any new skills or picked up new hobbies that you otherwise would not have if not for the current situation?
A: I can't think of any new skill but if it weren't for the current situation, I wouldn't know how great of a volleyball player my mom was, haha! She's a little rusty but she keeps me on my toes when we pepper outside on the street. Also, got my neighbors on the peppering and it turns into a whole game!
Q: What is your favorite on-the-field or on-court memory from this past 2019-20 year?
A: I can't remember one right now but one thing I miss on the court is the drill called "Big Point"! It's super fun and exciting especially when the coaches jump in and play with us.
Q: What is the first thing you will do after we return to a sense of "normalcy?"
A: The first thing I am going to do is go to the gym because I am tired of working out in my hot garage and using rusty old weights, haha! Also, hanging out with family and friends who are all quarantined and taking extra precautions because of their personal family situations.
