KAHUKU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's and women's cross country teams made their 2022 debut Saturday morning, participating at the University of Hawai'i Big Wave Invitational at the Kahuku Golf Course.
The Silvesword men tallied 41 points to finish second behind Hawai'i Pacific University's 17 while the women finished fourth of five teams, beating out Hawai'i Hilo by a single point.
In the men's 5-kilometer race to begin the event,
Owen Daugherty (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) completed the course in 17 minutes, 57.70 seconds for a fifth overall finish. He was immediately followed by
Peter Jan Ramos (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) at 18:28.30 and
Elijah Bernardo-Flores (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) who was just tenths-of-a-second behind at 18:28.70.
Peyton Oshiro (Honolulu/Hawai'i Baptist Academy) logged a time of 19:53.50, followed by
Conor McMahon (Pacific, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) at 23:46.10 and
Josiah Rodrigues (Honoka'a, Hawai'i/Honoka'a) at 24:56.30.
On the women's side, newcomer
Zoe McDonough (Fremont, Calif./Washington) was not only the 'Swords' first finisher of the 5-k event, she was the first Division II runner to finish, logging a time of 21:38.60 to finish 11th overall. Another new runner for this season,
Anne Drelling (Orange County, Calif./Canyon), finished the course in 22:19.70 while
Caitlin Bocobo (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) was Chaminade's No. 3 finisher at 25:08.80.
Eri Leong (Las Vegas/SECTA) was next at 25:16.30 followed by
Leila-Jayne Casison (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) at 25:23.80,
Ashley Yoshikawa (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) at 26:44.10 and Monteserrat Lanfranco (Honolulu/Roosevelt) at 28:21.80.
Host UH Manoa won the women's race with 19 points followed by University of the Pacific with 40.
The Silverswords will next be in action Saturday, Sept. 17 when they host their own Chaminade Invitational. The event will be held at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park with the first race starting at roughly 8 a.m.
