HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw against the Jessup University Warriors in the first meeting between the two programs.
Despite the no-decision on the scoresheet, the Silverswords (1-3-2 overall) have five Pacific West Conference points and are sixth in the early conference standings with a 1-0-2 PacWest mark.
The 'Swords struggled in the first half to gain possession, taking just two shots while the Warriors, one of three new PacWest members this year, attempted nine. But they did have a prime opportunity to cash in the game's first score when
Ruben Aguiniga's (Chula Vista, Calif./San Diego Christian College/Montgomery HS) desperation shot from 40 yards out as the first-half clock expired hit off the crossbar.
The second half of the match was filled with plenty of scoring opportunities from both teams, as the 'Swords took 13 shots and the Warriors took seven. Both teams took a total on 31 shots, with seven of those being on-goal for the 'Swords and six on-goal for the Warriors.
In the waning seconds, the 'Swords had a flurry of shots inside of eight seconds including a kick off the foot of
Cameron Rozsa (San Marcos, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Mission Hills HS) whose shot from the right side of the box was snared at the upper right shelf by Jessup goalkeeper Max Willard with just two seconds left.
Ian Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./Cuyamaca College/Meter Dei HS) took a team-high four shots in the match while
Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) made his first start in goal since Sept. 7 and saved five shots.
Willard made six saves for Jessup, which fell to 0-5-4 in its inaugural season in NCAA Division II and 0-2-1 in the PacWest.
The Silverswords are back at home Thursday to wrap up their four-game home stand when they host another PacWest newcomer, Menlo College, at Saint Louis Field. Kickoff is at 10 a.m.
