Season Review: Men’s Soccer

12/24/2024 9:00:00 AM

The 2024 season continued to be the growing phase for the Chaminade University men's soccer team. While the hard work the team put in didn't translate much in the win column, the Silverswords showed they were still a team to not sleep on when it was time to take the pitch.

The 'Swords, under the direction of third-year head coach Joshua Woodard, pulled off several strong showings including a big win over Dominican University of California to open the conference season. The Penguins were projected to finish fourth in the Pacific West Conference Preseason Poll. The 'Swords also forced a draw on the road against conference newcomer Vanguard, which finished the season fourth in its first year in the PacWest.

Among individual successes was junior midfielder Owen Malone (Carlsbad, Calif./Univ. of Saint Katherine/Carlsbad HS), who led the Silverswords in points (7) and goals (3). Ian Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./Cuyamaca College/Mater Dei HS) and Kala'i Duncan (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) both found the back of the net twice during the season.

Meanwhile, midfielder Owen Caba (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) continued to help set up for his teammates' successes with three assists. His eight career assists are just one behind the program record with one year of athletic eligibility remaining.

Jonah Valmonte (Poolesville, Md./Robert Morris University/Poolesville HS) started 10 games in-goal for Chaminade, recording a 3.42 goals-against average with one clean sheet while Kili Chappell (Wailuku, Maui, Hawai'i/Stanislaus State/Baldwin HS) made four starts and got the win over Dominican.

Chaminade bid aloha to seven seniors following the season.
