CUH WBB: A Night to Never Forget! Swords Fall to UH Hilo 71 to 58

Samantha Saito Scored her 1000th career Point

A night to forever remember ... January 23rd, 2009

Honolulu, HI – Four years ago Chaminade University started its Women's Basketball program. It was at this time that a 5'4 incoming freshman named Samantha Saito was asked to lead its brand new program as the starting point guard and my oh my .. has she delivered. 89 games later that 5'4 point guard from Aiea, Hawaii, now a senior, did something that will forever be remembered. She became the first player in the history of the program to score 1000 points. BoxScore

Samantha Saito's thoughts on her remarkable achievement tonight, “First of all, I feel extremely honored to even have been given the opportunity to score 1000 points. It has come with a lot of great people around me and a lot of wonderful support. It's an amazing achievement for me personally; however it's to time now to get back to work. We need to focus as a team and prepare for our battle with BYU Hawaii next week Friday.”

Despite Samantha Saito's unbelievable and unforgettable night, the Lady Swords lost a heartfelt battle to the visiting Vulcans of University of Hawaii @ Hilo, falling by a score 71 to 58. For the first time all season Chaminade led going into the half; they were up 30 to 25. Although, as history has proven through out the season, the Lady Swords Achilles heel has been there in ability to play 40 minutes of basketball well. They were outscored 46 to 25 in the second half. UH Hilo for the most did not miss a shot; they connected on 57% of their shots that they took from the floor in the second half, while Chaminade shot just 39% from the floor during the second half.

Samantha Saito scored 15 points tonight, although the high scorer for the Lady Swords tonight was senior power foraward, Lynette Dalle, who contributed with 16 points . Freshman shooting guard, Jamie Higa, rounded out the the Lady Swords with 10 points of her own.

Coach Christina Apisa's thoughts on the game, “Well for starters, I am really proud of Sam and what she accomplished tonight. I have seen her grow and mature a great deal these past four years.. this will be a night that people will be talking about for years and years to come.. I am just glad was fortunate enough to be a part of Sam's amazing accomplishment during her final year as a collegiate basketball player for Chaminade. As for tonight, at times we looked good and played well as a team. Other times we made mistakes, we missed shots, we turned the ball, and we forced shots. All of those things add up and end up hurting you; especially with such a talented team like UH Hilo. Missed shots and turnovers turn into points. .. We have a lot to work on as a team, overall though, I was impressed with our effort. .. Now it's time to go back to work and prepare for BYU Hawaii on the 29th.”

With the loss CUH falls to 1-11 overall and 0-4 in the PACWEST, while UH- Hilo improves their record to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the PACWEST. The Lady Swords next play on January 29th at 5:30PM in McCabe Gym against BYU Hawaii. Chaminade's only victory this season came against the Seasiders of BYUH on December 15th, 2009.
