Laie, HI – The Lady Swords stumbled out of the blocks and fell hard to BYU Hawaii tonight. The Seasiders scored the first 7 points of the game and never looked back. Chaminde trailed by 17 points at the half; they entered the locker room with the score 48 to 31.
Chamainde shot just 34% from the floor during the first half, compared to BYUH's 52%. Beyond the arch during the first half wasn't kind to the Lady Swords either; they had a connection rate of just 17% to the Seasiders 50%.
The Lady Swords were out rebounded by a margin of 40 to 25. It should be noted that Chaminade played with out there Center, Kayci Will, who suffered a season ending knee injury in practice this past week. Chaminade was forced to play with a 3 guard set tonight and will have to as the season progresses due to Kayci Will's injury.
Three players tonight were in double digits; Megan Kamehiro led the way with 16 points, Jamie Higa contributed with 11 points and Kellene Costello added 10 points of her own.
Megan Kamehiro went 4 for 9 from the floor, 2-5 for from three point land and she shot 6 for 8 from the charity line. Jamie Higa went 3 for 9 from the floor and a perfect 5 for 5 from the free throw line. Kellene Cosello shot 2 for 8 from the floor and went 5 for 6 from the free throw line.
Legendary football coach Lou Holtz once said. “You're never as good as everyone tells you when you win, and you're never as bad as they say when you lose.” This was the 3rd meeting tonight against BYU Hawaii; the Seasiders hold the edge 2 games to 1. The Lady Swords proved in the win against BYUH on December 15th that they are capable of playing with the Seasiders, unfortunately CUH, on the other hand, was not able to capture a win in the battle in Laie this evening.
This is the 14th straight loss for the Lady Swords since beating BYU- Hawaii on December 15th, 2009. Lou Holtz also once said, “We didn't lose the game, we just ran out of time.”
CUH railed towards the end of the game, however, the 17 point deficit at halftime proved to be too much to overcome. BYU Hawaii continued their remarkable shooting, as they shot 56% during the second half, while CUH improved a great deal from their 35% during the first half of play; they shot 46% percent from the floor during the second half. As a team they shot 40% all game and 28% from beyond the arch while the Seasiders shot nearly 54% from the floor and 50% from beyond the arch during the game.
The Lady Swords next game is against the Red Storm of Dixie State on February 16th. This is CUH's annual “Think Pink” game and all fans are encouraged to wear the color pink. Chaminade will wear pink uniforms, tip off is set for 5:30PM HST at McCabe Gym.
With the loss CUH falls to 1-16 overall and 0-9 in the PacWest, while BYU Hawaii improves their record to 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the PacWest.
