CUH WBB: Lady Swords Snap a 30 game losing streak, Beat Dominican 63 to 51

Honolulu, HI – It was exactly 30 games ago and almost 13 months to the day when the Lady Swords of Chaminade last captured a win on the basketball court. Chaminade won tonight, defeating Dominican University 63 to 51 in impressive fashion to earn their first PacWest win of the year.
 
The Lady Swords scored the first points of the game in first minute of the game on a free throw by Kayci Will; she in fact shot two free throws and made both. CUH only lost the lead once all game at the 16:42 mark of the 1st half, however at 15:41 they reclaimed the lead and never looked back, leading at halftime 27 to 23. In fact they outscored Dominican 36 to 28 in the 2nd half, for a combined total of 63 points to 51 for the Penguins.
 
 Freshman Jordan Ahakuelo (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City), led the Lady Swords with 16 points and 10 boards.
This is her first collegiate double- double, she said, “We believed as a team we could win and we came together as one. Dominican was a great team, they really fought hard. We battled and executed when we had to and we were able to come out on top with the W.” Jordan played 38 minutes tonight for the Lady Swords.
 
Sophomore Rachael Rickard (Lahaina, HI/Lahaina) thoughts on tonight's victory, “We were extremely hungry for this win. We put everything aside and came together as one, with the strong support of our coaches, our teammates and our fans; we were able to capture a victory tonight.”
 
Rachael Rickard scored 15 points and pulled down 7 boards on the night. She connected 3 of 7 shots from 3 point land. She was a perfect 2 for 2 from the free throw line.
 
Sophomore Jamie Higa (Honolulu, HI/Kalani), scored 13 points and pulled down 4 boards in tonight's win. She shot 50% from the floor and connected on 3 of 5 shots from the free throw line. She said, “After coming off some difficult losses, we knew we were going to be up against a very physical Dominican team tonight. All through the game, we trusted each other and played with high intensity for 40 minutes. With the support of the coaching staff, the fans and our team we were able to beat a good Dominican team.”
 
Freshman Markeshia Manning (Kapolei, HI/ Pearl City), grabbed 11 big rebounds for the Lady Swords and scored 4 points against the Penguins of Dominican University. She said, “We left everything on the court, we battled a good Dominican tea for 40 minutes. This kind of win, gives the confidence we need as we continue our PacWest play, we need to continue this momentum and level of play as the season marches forward the remainder of the season.”
 
Junior Co-Captain Kayci Will (Neoga, IL/Neoga), scored 10 points and pulled down 6 rebounds in the win. She was 4 for 6 from the free throw line. “We've been working hard all season long and been pushing ourselves to get a W, we finally did and it feels amazing! We worked for everything we got and came out ready to play from the get go. I cannot say enough about our fans, they helped fuel our burning desire to capture a win tonight against Dominican.”
 
The Lady Swords shot 34% from the floor and the Penguins of Dominican shot 33% on the night. The real difference in this game was that CUH won the turnover battle; they had just 19 to Dominican's 29. The team also shot well from the free throw line, connecting on 10 of 15 shots or 74%.  
 
Dominican was led by, Melissa Wise, who recorded 10 points and 7 boards in tonight's Pacific West Conference match.
 
The Lady Swords next basketball game is not until February 3rd against UH-Hilo. With the win Chaminade improves to 1-9 on the year and 1-2 in the PacWest. While Dominican falls to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest. Tip off for UH-Hilo is set for 5:00PM HST.
