CUH WBB: Swords Downed by HPU 77-71 as Comeback Effort Falls Short

Box Score HONOLULU, HI – Chaminade fell to Hawaii Pacific in an afternoon PacWest conference affair which HPU hosted on the campus of Moanalua High School.
 
The Swords spotted HPU a 43-25 halftime advantage before a ferocious second-half comeback led to another exciting finish in the PacWest.
 
The Swords offense came alive in the second half, led by sophomore Jordan Ahakuelo (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) who finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.  The Swords shot 50% in the second half after shooting 32% in the opening twenty minutes. 
 
Chaminade showed no quit after falling behind at the half, roaring back in the second half with inspired play.  As the game was entering the final minutes, the Swords Markeshia Manning (Kapolei, HI/Pearl City) connected from three, making the score 68-66 HPU with just under three minutes left.  Some key HPU baskets by Skye Savini helped the Sea Warriors hold-on for the 77-71 win.
 
Junior point guard Dianna Zane (Honolulu, HI /Roosevelt) had 9 points, 7 assists and 2 rebounds for Chaminade before fouling out with 1:54 remaining.  Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha) had a double-double for CUH with 11 points and 10 rebounds.  Kaneaiakala also fouled out for the Swords.
 
Chaminade lost the rebounding battle to HPU 42-35.
  
HPU was led by Skye Savini with 24 points and 8 rebounds in the win.
 
Coach Keanini commented after the game with cross-town rival HPU: “We struggled making shots in the first half.  We came out in the second half and played better.  It was good to see that against a quality team like HPU.  We're definitely getting there.”
 
Chaminade falls to 0-3 overall, 0-1 in the PacWest.  HPU improves to 5-3, 1-0 in the PacWest.
 
CUH is back in action at home on December 13th vs. Alaska-Anchorage. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM HT in McCabe Gym. The Swords will play the Seawolves again on the 14th at 5PM HT in McCabe Gym.
