Box Score HONOLULU, HI – CUH lost to Academy of Art this evening 64-43 in the PacWest Conference home opener for the Swords.
Chaminade set the tone early, as the Swords took a 6-0 lead to the first media timeout. Both teams turned to the defensive side after Chaminade's hot start as both teams combine to shoot 3-25 from the floor with 18 turnovers at the halfway point of the first half. The score with ten minutes gone in the first half was 6-6. Academy of Art led 22-17 at the break as both teams struggled from the floor. Junior forward
Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha) led the way with 7 of Chaminade's 17 first half points.
CUH shot 6-27 (22%) from the floor in the first half, while AAU shot 25% from the field. The rebounding totals were close in the opening half with the Urban Knights holding a 20-18 advantage.
A 20-6 run by Academy of Art to start the second half made the Urban Knights lead 19 points at 42-23 with 11:53 remaining in the contest. The Swords showed plenty of fight in the second half but struggled shooting the basketball, going 10-58 from the floor for the contest.
Sophomore
Markeshia Manning led the way with 9 points and 4 rebounds for Chaminade. Junior forward
Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha) finished with 7 points, while guard
Jordan Ahakuelo (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) added 8 points and 7 rebounds in defeat.
Chaminade shot 17% from the floor and Academy of Art shot 40% for the night.
Academy of Art was led by Vianai Austin with 16 points. The Urban Knights won a close rebounding battle, outrebounding CUH 41-38.
Chaminade is back in PacWest action on Jan. 14
th at UH-Hilo (5 PM HT). The next home contest is Jan. 30th against Grand Canyon. Tip is set for 5:00 PM HT in McCabe Gym.
The Swords are now 0-9, 0-3 PWC on the year, while Academy of Art goes to 7-6, 3-2 PWC.
