Box Score HONOLULU, HI –Chaminade and Dominican faced-off in a hard-fought PacWest Conference showdown this evening in McCabe Gym. The first half featured 28 fouls in a highly charged first twenty minutes of basketball.
Dominican lead 40-37 at the half, but not before some great back and forth action. A three by junior
Nikki Tauau (Oxnard, CA/Pacifica) gave Chaminade a 32-31 lead, which was followed up by a
Dianna Zane (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) layup to put the Swords up by three late in the half before the Penguins responded to earn the three-point halftime lead.
Chaminade shot 32% from the floor while Dominican (CA) shot 47% going into the break. Both teams were good from long range in the first twenty minutes, combining for nine three's. Zane led the Swords with 10 points at the break.
Dominican went on a 17-6 run to start the second half, leading 57-43 with 15:59 left in the contest. The Swords responded with an 11-2 run of their own and trailed 59-54 with just over twelve minutes left in the contest. The runs foreshadowed plays to come as the high-scoring continued the rest of the way. With 3:20 left, Chaminade trailed 78-74 after sophomore
Markeshia Manning (Kapolei, HI/Pearl City) made one of two free throws. Dominican held off Chaminade's attempts to gain the lead, and the Penguins held on for a 90-83 victory.
Junior forward
Rhani Kaneaiakala (Waimanalo, HI/Kamehameha) had an impressive all-around night with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while
Dianna Zane was Chaminade's leading scorer with 22 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Sophomore
Jordan Ahakuelo (Pearl City, HI/Pearl City) added 18 points and 5 rebounds while
Nikki Tauau added 11 points in defeat.
Chaminade shot 37% from the floor and the Penguins shot 47% from the floor and 45% from three, making nine from long distance in the win.
Dominican (CA) was led by Kimi Nakamura with 21 points.
Chaminade is back at home for PacWest action on Feb. 15th against Notre Dame de Namur. Tip is set for 5:00 PM HT in McCabe Gym.
The Swords are now 1-17, 1-11 PWC on the year, while Dominican improves to 4-19, 3-10 PWC.
