SAN RAFAEL, CA – Chaminade took down the Penguins of Dominican today, 5-2 at the Marin Tennis Club Park in the second contest for the Swords in the Pac West Championships.
Chaminade was able to earn two out of three doubles wins, and headed to singles with momentum. In #1 doubles, All PacWest performer
Yuka Kondo (Irvine, Ca/San Joaquin) and sophomore
Yanita Arnaudova (Hazkova, Bulgaria/Azen Zlatarov Foreign Language School) shined, defeating their counterparts from DUC 8-5. The combination of
Natalie Phanphengdy (Kapolei, HI/Aiea) and
Jan Matsumoto (Honolulu, HI/Maryknoll) won 8-5 at #2 doubles. Dominican earned a #3 doubles to keep it close. The Swords won three singles matches, highlighted by
Shayla Hosaka (Kailua,HI/Castle) winning 6-2, 6-0 at #6 singles to clinch the 5-2 victory.
Coach Mosley commented after the match: “We took two out of three doubles and #2, #3 and #6 singles. Shayla (Hosaka) clinched it. We rebounded well after a tough loss yesterday. We have another tough battle tomorrow against Hilo.
#5 Chaminade is back in action on April 21st, facing the #6 Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo in the 5
th place match at 9:00 AM PT in San Rafael, CA (Terra Linda High School Courts).
With today's win, Chaminade moves to 6-9 on the year. Dominican falls to 2-12.
