SAN RAFAEL, CA – Chaminade fell to the Vulcans of UH-Hilo today, 5-2 at the Terra Linda High School Courts Park in the final contest for the Swords in the Pac West Championships.
The combination of
Natalie Phanphengdy (Kapolei, HI/Aiea) and
Jan Matsumoto (Honolulu, HI/Maryknoll) won 8-5 at #2 doubles over the Vulcans. UH-Hilo earned #1 and #3 doubles to take the lead heading into singles. The Vulcans took three out of four completed singles matches to earn the 5-2 win. Chaminade's lone singles win came from Matsumoto at #3 singles (6-3, 6-4). Prior to the UHH win; the two teams had split two meetings on Oahu earlier this season.
Coach Mosley commented after the match: “We had a tough loss today. We lose Yuka (Kondo) and Nat (Phanphengdy) so we are looking to rebuild for next year.
With today's defeat, Chaminade concludes the season at 6-10 on the year. Hawaii-Hilo moves to 5-13.
