CUH WVB: Swords Drop Back and Forth Contest to Seattle Pacific in Four Sets

Spring, Powell lead offense

Box Score HONOLULU, HI- The Swords were downed by the Falcons of Seattle Pacific 25-21, 15-25, 25-27 and 25-27 in the nightcap of the second day of the 2012 Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational tonight in McCabe Gym. 
 
Chaminade got off to a fast start for the second night in a row, taking the first set from SPU 25-21. The Swords battled the Falcons throughout the final three sets, twice forcing SPU beyond twenty-five points to earn a set victory. 
 
Freshman outside hitter Kim Spring (Bern, Switzerland/ Feusi Bildungszentrum and Feusi Sportschule) again led the Swords 15 kills on a .163 hitting percentage and also added 15 digs, continuing her strong start to her freshman year. CUH junior Crystal Powell had 13 kills and senior Whitney Viveiros (Hilo, HI/Kamehameha) contributed 9 kills including some timely kills late to keep CUH close. 
 
Setters Daniella Montoya (Las Vegas, NM/ Robertson) and freshman Valentina Bevilacqua (Vacallo, Switzerland/Scuola Cantonale di Commercio Bellinzona) continue to share the load directing the CUH offense with Montoya contributing 23 assists and Bevilacqua 21.
 
The Swords looked sharp at times defensively, finishing with 70 digs as a team, while SPU had 55.  Seattle Pacific hit .240 for the match, while Chaminade hit .141 in the contest.
 
Athena Maskarich (Redwood City, CA/Notre Dame) led the Swords individually in digs for the second night in a row with 21 digs on the match.
 
The Falcons were led by Cailin Fellows with 18 kills.
 
The Swords move to 1-1 (0-0 PWC) with the loss. Seattle Pacific improves to 1-1. Chaminade is back in action on Saturday morning as the Swords take on Sonoma State.  First serve is set for 11:00 AM HT.
