Box Score HONOLULU – On Sept. 20, the Chaminade women's volleyball team had its worst scoring night of the season in a straight set sweep to fourth-ranked BYU-Hawai'i in Laie. In the rematch Saturday night at McCabe Gym, the scores were improved, but the result was the same.
For the second straight meeting, the Seasiders swept the Silverswords in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21, 25-17. The Swords dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in Pacific West Conference play, while BYUH improved to 8-1 and 3-1.
Shih Ting Chen had a match-high 15 kills while hitting at a .429 clip for the Seasiders. Noel Pauga and Erh Fang Hsu followed with eight kills each. Pauga also recorded eight total blocks.
Chaminade was led by
Cassie Rushlow's eight kills.
Kapiolani Rapoza and
Crystal Powell each followed with six.
The first set was played nearly evenly, but three Sword attack errors aided a BYUH 7-1 run, putting the visitors up, 16-9. CUH battled back with a pair of Rushlow kills, one from
Kylee Pedro, a
Valentina Bevilacqua service ace and a BYUH ball-handling error to draw to 22-20. But three Chaminade errors could close the set in favor of the Seasiders.
Set 2 saw the Swords take a 12-10 lead, led by a trio of Powell kills. But a pivotal 6-2 run gave the lead back to the Seasiders, one they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the set.
BYUH jumped out to a 10-5 lead to start the third set. CUH battled back, but never got to within three points as the Siders completed the sweep.
Chaminade was held to a .106 attacking percentage in the match while BYUH hit a healthy .340. The Seasiders also out-blocked the Swords, 12-5.
The Silverswords embark on their first Mainland road trip of the year as they face Academy of Art next Wednesday in San Francisco, the first of five straight matches away from McCabe Gym.
