Lady ’Swords Downed at Holy Names

Box Score OAKLAND, Calif. – Coming off its first road win in seven years, the Chaminade University women's basketball team's search for its first win on the Mainland will have to wait a little while longer.
 
The Silverswords, playing in the first game outside of O'ahu this season, were bounced by Holy Names, 89-64, in a Pacific West Conference game at Tobin Gymnasium on Saturday.
 
Chaminade fell to 2-12 on the season and 2-6 in the PacWest. The Hawks improved to 9-6 and 5-4.
 
Lilia Maio continued her outstanding freshman season with a 17-point, 8-rebound performance for the 'Swords. Shana Kawakami followed with 10 points while Kristle Henry added nine points and Kennedi Akana had eight.
 
Britney Machado-Potestio and Renique Fitzpatrick both had 19 points to lead the Hawks. Fitzpatrick also hauled down eight rebounds. Sonia Aguilar had 17 points and five assists.
 
The Hawks grabbed a 7-point lead at 20-13 with 11:09 left in the first half, but Florita hit a 3 along with a pair of Akana field goals as Chaminade closed to 24-22 with 6:46 left until halftime. However, HNU had other ideas as a late 12-5 run would help give the Hawks a 43-33 heading into intermission.
 
Maio had 12 first-half points to lead the scoring column for the 'Swords while Fitzpatrick countered with 12 of her own. The Hawks shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor while CUH went 12-of-28 for 43 percent. Chaminade held the rebounding advantage 18-16.
 
 However, the tide turned in the opening stages of the second half when Machado hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, followed by a Sonia Aguilar layup. It triggering a 13-0 run and 56-33 Holy Names lead, which eventually grew to 29. The 'Swords managed to minimize the damage after the initial surge, but could get no close to 19 the rest of the way.
 
Chaminade ended the contest shooting 42.3 percent from the floor (22-of-52) while pulling down 36 rebounds. The Silverswords also hit 18-of-23 from the foul line, but also committed 27 turnovers. CUH forced Holy Names to a 40 percent second half shooting percentage and 44.8 in the game. The Hawks managed to pull down 37 boards with 16 assists while hitting 23-of-30 from the charity stripe.
 
The road trip continues to Central California when the 'Swords visit Fresno Pacific on Monday.
