Box Score FRESNO, Calif. – A rough stretch for the Chaminade University women's basketball in the middle of the first half resulted in a 75-61 loss to Fresno Pacific in a Pacific West Conference game on Monday.
The Silverswords (2-13 overall, 2-7 PacWest) were held without a field goal during an eight-minute stretch in the first half, turning a tied game into a double-digit lead for the Sunbirds (4-11, 4-5).
Lilia Maio, who earlier in the day was named Hawai'i Tourism Authority PacWest Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week, had a team-high 16 points and six rebounds. The freshman from Nanakuli, O'ahu, also had three assists, three blocks and four steals. Fellow freshman
Angela Rigo followed with eight points while
Kennedi Akana had seven.
Kelcie Namba and
Glacen Florita added six each for the 'Swords.
Jazmine Simpson had a game-high 18 points for the Sunbirds, followed by Jenay Herring with 17.
A
Kristle Henry basket knotted the game at 7 with 15:45 remaining in the first half, but the 'Swords would not get another bucket until the 7:38 mark when Maio got a layup to drop. By that juncture, the Sunbirds owned a 26-10 lead. FPU would build the lead to as many as 22 late in the first half.
CUH made only 6-of-23 shots from the floor (26.1 percent) while Fresno Pacific was 18-of-39 (46.2).
The Silverswords came out in the second half and made things interesting as Maio made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 45-33 with 13:40 remaining. However, Chaminade would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
But the good news for the 'Swords was they shot significantly better in the second half, hitting half their shots (14-for-28), raising the team's shooting percent in the game to 39 percent and forced 29 Sunbird turnovers. But CUH committed 28 giveways and was outrebounded, 49-26.
The 'Swords continue the road trip on Thursday when they face Academy of Art.
