Penguins WBB Puts Freeze on ’Swords, 79-61

Akana's 16 points vs. Dominican tied a career-high.
Box Score HONOLULU – The Chaminade women's basketball team's search for its first multi-win season since 2006-07 will have to wait another day as the Silverswords dropped a 79-61 decision to Dominican University of California in a Pacific West Conference game Monday at McCabe Gym.
 
The loss dropped the 'Swords to 1-9 overall and 1-3 in the PacWest. The Penguins tasted victory for the first time this season, improving to 1-12 and 1-6.
 
Kennedi Akana led the 'Swords with a career-high tying 16 points with six rebounds. Freshman Kristle Henry followed with 14 points and five rebounds.
 
Salonika Quewon-Owens had a monster performance for Dominican with 19 points, 17 rebounds and four assists. Carly Holboke also had 19 points for the Penguins.
 
Dominican jumped ahead early, leading by as many as eight points midway through the first half. Both teams encountered early foul difficulty as both were in the foul shooting bonus by the 10-minute mark.
 
Angela Rigo gave the 'Swords their first lead at 31-28, hitting a 3-pointer with 6:42 left in the half. However, the Penguins quickly jumped back in front courtesy of a 22-7 run to finish the half as Dominican led, 50-38.
 
The Penguins shot 51.4 percent (18-of-35) from the floor in the half with 12 assists, while Chaminade was held to 38.7 (12-of-31) and only six assists. The Silverswords were also outrebounded, 25-14.
 
A DUC bucket to open the second half gave the visitors its largest lead at 52-38. Sabrina Angle hit a 3-ball on the ensuing possession, followed by a Henry layup cut the deficit back to single digits at 52-43. But the victory-starved Penguins' went on a 10-2 run gave them their largest lead of 18 at 62-44 with 12:06 left, essentially putting the game out of reach.
 
Chaminade shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60) in the contest, but managed to hold the Penguins to 27.8 percent in the second half, 39.4 for the game. DUC also out-boarded the 'Swords, 60-33, and had 17 assists to CUH's nine.
 
The 'Swords conclude their home stand on Wednesday when they face PacWest preseason favorite and defending champion, Academy of Art at 5 p.m. Live audio of game will be available on goswords.com.
