Box Score HONOLULU – For the third straight game, the Chaminade University women's basketball team put up another valiant effort, but the results were the same – another tough loss, this time to Holy Names.
The Silverswords dropped a 69-63 decision to Holy Names at McCabe Gym on Saturday, dropping them to 3-21 overall and 3-15 in the PacWest. The Hawks improved to 10-14 and 6-12.
Lilia Maio led the Silverswords with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Kristle Henry had 16 points, four rebounds and three assists while
Glacen Florita added 12 points and pulled down eight boards.
Renique Pitzpatrick led the Hawks with 20 points and 16 rebounds while Sonia Aguilar and Britney Machado-Potestio each had 16. Aguilar made all 12 of her foul shots in the contest, setting a CUH opponent record for free throws made in a game. Notre Dame de Namur's Maya Arellanes tied the record in Chaminade's previous game with 11 made on Thursday.
The first half went tooth-and-nail with neither team holding more than a four-point lead in the frame. The half ended when
Hanna Curtius made a steal near midcourt, flipped the ball to Florita, who pulled up and buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key as time expired, giving the Silverswords a 32-30 halftime lead.
The stats reflected the closeness of the game as nearly every category was equal with the exception of made 3-pointers (four for CUH, one for HNU) and turnovers (14 by the Hawk, eight for the 'Swords).
The first eight minutes of the second half was no different as the lead changed hands six times with four ties during that span. The 10
th tie of the game came with 12:17 on Henry's jumper, making it 42-all. However, Chaminade scored only two points over the next five minutes as Holy Names took a 55-44 lead.
Maio then scored seven points during a 'Swords' run that cut the margin to 60-57 with 2:43 left. The Hawks built the lead back to seven at 64-57, but
Shana Kawakami knocked down a 3-ball, bringing Chaminade to within four. After a pair of Machado-Potestio free throws, Henry hit a trey with 1:12 left, making it a one-possession game at 66-63. The Hawks then hit 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to preserve the win.
The Hawks feasted at the line, hitting 27-of-37, compared to the 'Swords' 8-of-15. Holy Names also dominated in the paint, outscoring Chaminade, 30-8.
But the Silverswords hit 11 3-pointers, tied for second-most in program history, in 19 attempts for a percentage of 57.9. They also managed to make more field goals (22-to-20) and grab more rebounds (44-to-43) than the Hawks.
Chaminade will face BYU-Hawai'i on Thursday, its second-to-last game of the season. Live streaming audio of the game will be on goswords.com.
