LAIE, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University women's tennis team may not be an elite level squad like BYU-Hawai'i, but if the latest meeting between the two is any indication, the Silverswords may be on the right track.
The 'Swords faced the nationally-ranked Seasiders at BYUH Tennis Courts Monday, but did manage to take a set off the No. 2 team in the nation, falling 8-1. It's the first time since March 2012 the Silverswords (0-9) managed to take a set off the Seasiders (15-0), who are also ranked No. 1 in the West Region.
The 'Swords' No. 1 doubles team of
Jan Matsumoto and
Kimberly Takara downed the Seasiders' duo of Alexandra Ulbrichtova and Jin Jin Han, 8-5, to capture the day's first set. However, BYUH managed to capture the remaining two doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead, heading into singles competition.
Matsumoto hung tough with Markio Kobayashi in No. 3 singles, but ended up on the short end of a 6-2, 6-1 count as the Seasiders won all six singles events.
The Silverswords and Seasiders will face each other again in Laie on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
