IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University guard
Destiny Castro on Monday was named the Pacific West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
The Notre Dame High School graduate from Talofofo, Guam, had a memorable game in last Tuesday's 90-86 win at Holy Names by becoming the first Silverswords women's player to score 40 points in a game. She also set another single-game record by making 15 baskets and tied another with seven steals.
Her 40-point effort is the highest scoring game by a Hawai'i collegiate women's player in either Division I or II since Shayla Washington of BYU-Hawai'i had 44 in March 2012. It is also the first 40-point outing by a Chaminade player since Christophe Varidel's 42 against Baylor in November 2013.
Castro ended the week with a 14-point, six-rebound and three-assist outing at Notre Dame de Namur. She is the PacWest's second-leading scorer at 20 points per game, ranks fifth in assists (3.9) and is the conference leader in steals (3.3).
It's the junior's second Player of the Week honor this year. The other weekly winners are Azusa Pacific's Daylee Hanson (Defender of the Week) and Holy Names' Jaliah Williams (Freshman of the Week).
The Silverswords (4-9 overall, 3-6 PacWest) are just a half-game out of the sixth spot for a berth in March's conference championship tournament and face two squads who are also battling for bids. They face Point Loma (6-9, 5-4 PacWest) on Thursday and Concordia Irvine (4-9, 3-5) on Saturday.
