Castro Named All-PacWest First Team

IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University guard Destiny Castro (Talofofo, Guam/Notre Dame HS) on Wednesday was named to the All-Pacific West Conference First Team.

The junior guard had a record-breaking season, setting several single-game and single-season marks. Castro became the first Silveswords women's player to reach 500 points and average 20 per game, the latter ranking second in the PacWest and 19th nationally. She also forced opponents to respect her perimeter game by making 31 3-pointers. She had 27 in her first two years combined.

Castro was also a nightmare on the defensive end, recording 3.3 steals per game which led the PacWest for a second straight year and was seventh in the nation in the category. Her 80 total steals is also a single-season program record.

She also finished in the conference's top 10 in field goal percentage (42.3), assists (3.3), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1).

Earlier this year, Castro set two single-game records with a 40-point outing at Holy Names and an eight-steal performance at Azusa Pacific.

Castro is the first Chaminade women's basketball player to earn first team all-conference honors since Brittnee Fonnesbeck in 2007 and the third time in her career she has been recognized as All-PacWest. Her on-court success also translated team success with seven wins, tying for the most in program history. The Silverswords' ninth-place finish also matched the 2014-15 squad for their highest in the PacWest since the conference expansion to 10 teams in 2011.

Dominican's Natalie Diaz was named the PacWest Player of the Year.

With 1,135 career points, Castro is on pace to break Lilia Maio's program record of 1,266 early next season.
