IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University guard
Destiny Castro (Talofofo, Guam/Notre Dame HS) has been named the Pacific West Conference Women's Basketball Defender of the Week during the week of Jan. 6 to 12.
The senior recorded 12 steals and 10 rebounds in three games last week to earn her first weekly defender award since her sophomore season. She also added 76 points during the week.
Castro had three or more steals in all three contests including five in their win Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur and helped the Silverswords hold the Argonauts to just 51 points, tied for the second-fewest by a Chaminade opponent in program history. She also had two 27-point outings.
Castro ranks fifth nationally in steals at 3.53 per game and is the runaway leader in the PacWest in the category. The next closest player in steals per game is Fresno Pacific's Ashley Cross at 2.60 per game.
Other weekly winners were Hawai'i Pacific University's Amy Baum who was the Player of the Week and Holy Names' Amaya Ervin who was the Freshman of the Week.
