Box Score 2 The Chaminade University women's volleyball team's first road trip of the 2014 season came to an end Saturday with them almost literally serving notice.
The Silverswords set a school record and tied another at the service line in a 25-10, 25-15, 25-7 rout of Mills College at Haas Gymnasium in Oakland, Calif.
The 'Swords (7-3) had 23 service aces to set a school mark while sophomore setter
Kawai Oleole had 10 aces, which tied the single-match school record set by Samantha Miller against Grand Canyon on Oct. 23, 2007.
Earlier in the day, the 'Swords fell to Simon Fraser in four sets, 25-14, 27-25, 22-25, 26-24, in the finale of the PacWest/GNAC Crossover in San Rafael, Calif. Chaminade finished the tournament at 1-3.
Simon Fraser 3, Chaminade 1 (25-14, 27-25, 22-25, 26-24)It might've been one of the toughest losses of the season for the Silverswords. After being routed in the first set, the 'Swords built a 21-16 lead in the second, but the Clan (6-2) out-pointed them, 11-4, to win the set and build a 2-0 advantage.
The third set saw Chaminade again build a five-point lead at 20-15, but Simon Fraser rallied to knot the score at 21. This time, the 'Swords would fend off the potential comeback with a
Ku`ulei Lynch kill and forcing a pair of hitting errors to extend the match to a fourth set.
However, Set 4 saw an eerily similar tone to the second. Chaminade built a seemingly comfortable lead late in the stanza at 23-18 and seemed poised to send the match to a decisive fifth set. But the Clan rattled off six consecutive points to set up match point. A bad set by the Clan would end the string of points, but a Kelsey Robinson kill, followed by a CUH hitting error would leave the Silverswords stunned.
Three Silverswords logged double-digit kills, led by
Cassie Rushlow's 12. Lynch and
Reigna Johnson had 10 each and both had three block solos and one block assist.
Valentina Bevilacqua had 32 assists with
Waihilo Chartrand and
Athena Maskarich turning in double-digit digs at 21 and 11, respectively.
Chaminade was out-hit percentage-wise, .360-.294, and in total kills (63-51) but did have more total team blocks (9-7) and a slight advantage in digs (53-52).
Chaminade 3, Mills 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-7)The sting of the earlier loss to Simon Fraser was seemingly eased against the Cyclones (1-6-1). The Silverswords dominated in nearly every phase of the match, except for blocks (3-1). Chaminade led in kills (34-12), committing only eight hitting errors with a .464 percentage on the night. The Silverswords had 34 assists to Mills' 12 and out-dug them, 30-12.
Rushlow led the 'Swords with 13 kills with a .500 percentage while freshman
Catherine Thomason put down a season-high six kills while committing no errors on 10 swings. Bevilacqua had 25 assists while freshman
Natashya Enos had 11 digs.
All 10 of Oleole's aces came in the third set and all during the same rotation. At one point, the Roosevelt High School graduate had seven straight aces. Rushlow also had a field day, serving up seven aces.
The Silverswords return to O'ahu and will open Pacific West Conference action against defending champion BYU-Hawai'i in Laie on Thursday.
