Box Score HONOLULU – For 105 minutes, Chaminade and Hawai'i Pacific were locked in an intense battle for men's soccer city supremacy. However, Mother Nature had other ideas.
Playing virtually the entire game under a steady rain Saturday at St. Louis Field, the Silverswords and Sea Warriors went down to double overtime. Then twilight turned into darkness and with 4:24 left in the contest, game officials decided to end the game in a 2-2 draw.
The tie ended Chaminade's season at 0-15-1 overall and 0-11-1 in the Pacific West Conference. HPU finished at 8-5-3 and 6-3-3.
The Sea Warriors scored the game's first goal from Brais Garcia at the 11-minute mark. But the Swords answered 23 minutes later when
Sam Galloway scored his first goal of the year after receiving a head-pass from
Kevin Leong from 15 yards straight away. It was Galloway's ninth career goal, increasing his school record, and Leong's first assist of the year.
A CUH red card right before halftime resulted in the Swords playing a man down in the second half. HPU took advantage with a goal in the 70
th minute to take a 2-1 lead, but the Swords would get the equalizer with just over a minute left in regulation. Senior
Matt Schmidt, who had never found the back of the net in his collegiate career, headed in a ball for his first, and ultimately, only career goal.
The wet and slick conditions resulted in a low shot count for the Silverswords as they attempted only 12 in the game, four on goal. Swords goal keeper
Nic Jetter made five saves.
Before the contest, the Swords honored junior
Nika Sandadze, who decided to forgo his final year of eligibility due to his upcoming graduation, as well as seniors Galloway, Schmidt,
Jose Carranza,
Nikolas Dudley,
Brett Hasenmueller and
Michael Marrs.
