THE 1982-83 MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM is known for one of the biggest upsets in sports history when they defeated No. 1-ranked University of Virginia, 77-72, on December 23, 1982 at the Blaisdell Center. Led by head coach Merv Lopes, the Silverswords did the unthinkable by taking down one of the most successful programs in college basketball, which included 7-foot-4 All-American Ralph Sampson. The victory would lead to the creation of the nation’s premiere college basketball pre-season tournament, now called the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
