THOMAS "CHICO" FURTADO was one of the players who helped set the Chaminade men's basketball foundation in the late 1970s. The fiery guard, who played from 1976 to 1980, still ranks third all-time in assists with 486 while his career 5.8 assists per game is second. Furtado's 21 assists against California Baptist on Dec. 29, 1978 remains the school's all-time single game record. He also a member of the program's 1,000-point club with 1,015 career points.
Furtado's individual success also translated to a 72-31 record during his playing days including the first two postseason appearances. The 1978-79 squad won 24 contests and reached the NCAA Division III semifinals.
